Controversial aspects in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontology

First day :

  • Caries pathology and its complications.
  • Tissue response to shallow, medium and deep caries.
  • Diagnostic tools in the diagnosis of reversible/irreversible pulpitis. Correlation between clinical and histologic pulp diagnoses.
  • Controversies about the depth of caries excavation. Selective vs non-selective excavation.
  • Indirect pulp therapy. A misconception in modern Dentistry.
  • Direct pulp capping. Partial and full pulpotomy.
  • Controversies concerning the success rate of Vital Pulp Therapy.
  • Bioceramic materials. Are they an improvement compared to the “old” calcium hydroxide?

Second day:

  • Infection of the root canal system. Patterns of microbial colonization of the canal space.
  • Periapical lesion formation. Classification of the types of lesions.
  • Apical limit of root canal instrumentation and obturation: the most heated controversy in modern endodontics.
  • The controversial issue of apical “patency”.
  • Lateral canals: is their obturation possible?
  • Limitations in achieving a sterile root canal system with chemo-mechanical instrumentation. Do the “new technologies” work?
  • Treatment of the large lesions of the jaws. Is a surgical approach always necessary?
  • Regenerative endodontic procedures. Are we really regenerating the dentin-pulp complex?

HD videos will be used throughout the course to illustrate the clinical procedures.
